The theological implications of Jonah’s commission should not be overlooked. Yahweh is represented here as the Lord of all nations who holds all the world morally accountable. “Their wickedness has come up before me.” Nineveh may be great, but God is greater, for he speaks from his heavenly throne. The language here is reminiscent of that which was used in Genesis of the wickedness of the cities destroyed by brimstone (cf. Gen 18:20–21).
